The real Dalton Guards

Private Eugene Terrill Kingsley, 19, one of the real Dalton Guards of the Phillips Georgia Legion, who did not participate in the attack on Fort Sanders at Knoxville in 1863.

This son of a Dalton, Georgia merchant (who is not listed as a slave-holder on the1860 U.S. Federal Census: Slave Schedules) was not there because he had died of typhoid fever in West Virginia, on Oct. 9, 1861, the day after his nineteenth birthday.
