John Lorimer Worden, the lieutenant-commanding of the USS Monitor, in his post-war years. Via the excellent “restoring the Monitor” blog. The fellow whose seamanship the novel’s Sergeant Timothy Chase of the Twenty-Ninth Massachusetts so admired from his perch atop a casemate at Fortress Monroe.
